Abstract
In the comedy Volpone, or the Fox, Ben Jonson uses symbolism and satire to create a fable world. He borrows ridiculous animal images to represent the human world, satirizing human greed, deception, and desire. This paper applies close reading to analyze the animalized characters in order to explore the functions of animal images in characterization, emplotment, and thematization.
